The raison d'etre of this website is to provide you with hard scientific information which may help you make informed decisions in your quest for health (so far I have blogged concise summaries of over 1,500 scientific studies and have had three books published).

My research is mainly focused on the effects of cholesterol, saturated fat and statin drugs on health. If you know anyone who is worried about their cholesterol levels and heart disease, or has been told to take statin drugs you could send them a link to this website, and to my statin or cholesterol or heart disease books.

Patients affected by gout have lower levels of HDL cholesterol than healthy people

This post contains a summary of a study Published in Bollettino della Società italiana di biologia sperimentale 1984 May 30;60(5):1063-9 and a recipe for stuffed zuchini.

Study title and authors:
Fat: An Appreciation of a Misunderstood Ingredient, with Recipes
Books:
Determination of plasma levels of apolipoprotein E and of HDL-cholesterol in gouty patients
Frati E, Castagna ML, Bacarelli M, Giordano N, Fioravanti A, Pucci G, Marcolongo R.

This study can be accessed at: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6590073

The authors examined the levels of cholesterol in a group of 34 patients affected by gout and in a population of healthy subjects.

The group of patients affected by gout had lower levels of high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) than the population of healthy subjects.

The best way to raise HDL-C levels is to eat saturated fat. See here.

Study title and authors:
Cholesterol distribution among lipoprotein fractions in patients with gout and normal controls.
Jacobelli S, Arteaga A, Bidegain F.

This study can be accessed at: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3464758

This study investigated the association of cholesterol levels with gout. The study included 29 gouty men and 34 healthy controls.

The results of the study showed that gouty patients had lower total cholesterol, lower low density lipopritein (LDL) cholesterol and lower high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol than the healthy men.
