The raison d'etre of this website is to provide you with hard scientific information which may help you make informed decisions in your quest for health (so far I have blogged concise summaries of over 1,500 scientific studies and have had three books published).

My research is mainly focused on the effects of cholesterol, saturated fat and statin drugs on health. If you know anyone who is worried about their cholesterol levels and heart disease, or has been told to take statin drugs you could send them a link to this website, and to my statin or cholesterol or heart disease books.

Men who stop smoking AND lower their cholesterol levels have a 2% increase in their death rates

This study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association 1982;248(12):1465-1477

Study title and authors:
Multiple Risk Factor Intervention Trial. Risk Factor Changes and Mortality Results.
Multiple Risk Factor Intervention Trial Research Group.

The trial can be accessed at: http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abstract/248/12/1465?ijkey=98dac61821012c6f6302fa1647735fb3be2dd0ff&keytype2=tf_ipsecsha

The trial was designed to test the effect of various health intervention initiatives on mortality rates in 12,866 high-risk men aged 35 to 57 years.

Men were assigned either:
(i) To a special intervention program consisting of treatment for hypertension, counseling for cigarette smoking, and dietary advice for lowering blood cholesterol levels
(ii) To their usual sources of health care in the community.

The study reveals the men in the special intervention program (who quit smoking and lowered their cholesterol levels etc) had a 2% higher mortality rate than the men who did not have any health interventions.

Recipe of the day

Stuffed Steak Rolls

Ingredients:

2 thin cut steaks
roasted red peppers
fresh basil
salt
pepper
1 – 1 1/2 cups red wine (I’d say use a lighter red like a pinot noir or a petit sirrah)
3 tbs olive oil from peppers

Directions:
1. Pound steak to 1/8 inch thickness and season with salt and pepper on both sides.
2. Lay peppers flat on the steaks and then top them with fresh basil leaves.
3. Cut each steak into 3 smaller steaks.
4. Roll up each smaller steak and secure with a toothpick.
5. Heat oil in skillet over medium high heat.
6. Brown steaks on all sides for 2 minutes per side.
7. Add in red wine and cover. Reduce heat to medium and cook for about 10 minutes.
8. Remove toothpicks and enjoy!
